On 19 May, Southwark Pensioners’ Centre (SPC) brought sunshine and joy to its members with a delightful day trip to Brighton, filled with fresh sea air, hearty meals and warm companionship.
From start to finish, the outing proved to be a boost for both body and mind. Members praised the ease of travel, the thoughtful organisation and the kindness of driver Bruce, who made first-time attendee Ann – who uses a wheelchair – feel “like a queen for the day”.

Clarence, who recently joined the SPC, celebrated his 91st birthday with his daughter on his first ever outing with the group. Meanwhile, others like Andrew enjoyed their first trip out of London with the SPC, revelling in the coastal views and sea breeze.
Lunch was a highlight, with Rose, Joyce and Regina enjoying fish and chips at Captains near the pier and Ann, Pat, Val and Eric – who recently celebrated his 92nd birthday – enjoying theirs at Palm Court. Margaret explored Brighton’s new Sea Lanes development, discovering wellness facilities by the beach, while Maureen stumbled upon a restored vintage Rolls Royce on the way back to London at Pease Pottage Services.
Clean, accessible new facilities by the pier also drew praise. Overall, attendees described the trip as a “great experience” that lifted spirits and fostered community.
The SPC is generously supported by Southwark Charities and Barchester to offer wheelchair-accessible day trips.
