Southwark Pensioners Action Group (SPAG) is SPC’s independent campaigning group, giving older people a voice on key issues like pensions, housing, care, transport and the NHS. Members meet regularly to discuss policy, organise campaigns and hold decision-makers to account. All SPC members are welcome to join!
Recent activity
We hope to meet with the new Leader of the Council, Councillor Sarah King on Friday Oct 3rd 2025. The Pensioners’ Parliament
was a very good meeting at Westminster with MPs Miatta Fahnbulleh, Helen Hayes and Florence Eshalomi attending. Sincere thanks to Ellen Stafford and the MP teams for making things go so well. We are making plans for the next one. Meetings on Friday morning have not had visiting speakers, Instead we have reviewed the role of SPAG and considered what we should focus on. We are a very diverse group with a range of interests and concerns about the needs of older people in Southwark. This is reflected in our campaigning work.
Campaigns
SPAG continues to do detailed work on care issues based on our belief that both home and residential care should be publicly funded and publicly provided. We are pressing for home care to be brought in house and for the monitoring of residential care to be more transparent so people receiving care and their friends and relatives are better informed. We have also submitted objections to the proposed design of the Love Walk care home and have campaigned that the proposed home on a site in Asylum Road be Council run. We have also campaigned at the London Region of the National Pensioners Convention for the suspension of one of our delegates (Tony O’Brien) to be lifted.
We continue to meet on the first Friday of every month in Southwark Pensioners’ Centre. All SPC members and other over-50s are welcome. Please join us at our meetings at the Centre or on Zoom. The dates of the next meetings are 6 June and 4 July.
